You've probably never heard of Tom Magee, the Canadian bodybuilder and mixed martial arts fighter whom World Wrestling Federation (now WWE)'s Vince McMahon wanted to build up as the successor to Hulk Hogan in the mid-1980s. Despite being hyped as WWE's "next big thing," things didn't quite work out for the impressively-built Magee; while getting his feet wet in smaller shows across the USA, management was unhappy with how sloppy his matches were and, according to some critics, how he lacked charisma in the ring. Read more about what happened here. The screenshots below are from Magee's match against Japanese wrestling legend Riki Choshu. Watch it here.
Tom was indeed an impressive specimen!! Never saw the "lack of charisma" they refer to, he just needed to become more comfortable in his own skin. HORRIBLE what happened to him, both by wrestling as well as life in general. From what I hear, he's a genuinely nice guy! I hope he's doing well now!

DeleteHate to nit-pick Bruno but his last name is spelt Magee, not McGee. He also competed in Worlds Strongest Man, and acted - most famously in the movie "Stone Cold" in a fairly famous fight scene against ex-NFLer Brian Bosworth.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing it out. Fixed it.
