Before He Was Mason Ryan

Before coming to America to join Florida Championship Wrestling and then WWE, Mason Ryan was a (literally) big presence in the UK wrestling scene. Barri Griffiths -- that's his real name -- first wrestled as The Celtic Warrior and then Gladiator Goliath (he was one of the gladiators in the UK version of the reality game show).  Here he is as The Celtic Warrior wearing ring gear that's so tight and small, it practically shows off everything. Way to go, Barri!

Jeremy Prophet

Canadian wrestler Jeremy Prophet (6 ft. tall, 225 pounds) has appeared in matches for Top Of The World Wrestling and Great North Wrestling. Trained by former WWE star Jacques Rougeau, Jeremy has also wrestled in the US as an independent. Watch his match against bodybuilder Scott Steiner here. 

To The Mat

Last week, US cable channel Country Music TV (CMT) aired an original movie titled To The Mat. It starred Ricky Schroder as Aaron the Ant, the smallest member of a family of pro wrestling "giants." To The Mat tells the story of a laid-back ex-wrestler (Schroder) who's trying to keep his family's down-and-out Southern wrestling school above water. When his mother hires an uptight Wall Street consultant from New York (Bell Bundy) to help get the books in order, these two opposites must find a way to get along and save the family business. Here's Chris Masters in a May 2010 match against Dolph Ziggler. It's been reported that Masters is no longer with WWE and that he now makes appearances as an independent wrestler in Portugal.

Vintage Beefcakes of Wrestling - Cowboy Bill Watts

Here's a photo from the match that turned me on to professional wrestling for life...

It shows Cowboy Bill Watts kneeling over Bruno Sammartino and, if I recall correctly, is from the late 1960s/early1970s. As a precocious youngster, I had an issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated and these pictures of Bruno and Bill stirred something in me, something I could not identify till I reached my teens. What was it about the images of these two burly, barely-dressed he-men battling each other that was so fascinating to me?  Till this day, I still don't know how, at the tender age of 6 or 7, I became obsessed with wrestlers and wrestling. I'll admit that there were times in my life when I wished I could have been more "normal," but I've learned to accept my particular brand of "kink." So thanks Bruno and Cowboy Bill for making my life a little less ordinary.  Here are pics of Cowboy Bill at his prime; watch him in a 1965 match against Tomas Marin.
