Flashback Friday: Steve Travis

In this edition of Flashback Friday, we go back...way back to the late 70's-early 80's, the years when American wrestler Steve Travis was making a name for himself as a crowd favorite. Travis (real name Steve Musulin) hailed from Charlotesville, Virginia. He stood 6'2" (188 cm) and weighed 229 lbs (103 kg). Travis made his pro debut in 1976 and wrestled for promotions like WWF (now WWE), National Wrestling Alliance, Georgia Championship Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and several other promotions. His wrestling career came to an end when he figured in a car crash which left him partially disabled in 1984. Sadly, Travis passed away last August 2018 from health complications brought on by multiple strokes. He was 67 (read about it here). You can watch some of Travis's televised matches on YouTube but be warned -- the image quality of these videos is quite poor (they look like videotaped matches). Here are a couple of good ones: Steve Travis vs Austin Idol and Steve Travis vs Blackjack Mulligan.

  1. Sad to hear of his passing, but at least he had a life after wrestling. I think his real name was "Muslin," or at least thst was the ring name he used. Pro Wrestling video posters don't seem to be too great on spelling, e.g., this match in which he is listed as "Steve Muslim":

In any case, he was among the best physiques on wrestling TV back in the day, when the bodybuilder types were more of a rarity. Anon.
