Flashback Friday: Guvan (2014)

Thanks to blog follower Paul for bringing my attention to independent wrestler Guvan. And by independent, I mean really independent. Guvan is one of a handful of wrestlers on the (small) roster of Hype Wrestling, a backyard wrestling outfit in Canada which started (and closed down?) in 2014. Yes, Hype is literally a backyard wrestling promotion. To be fair, Hype's wrestlers are more skilled than most of the teenagers who put up a makeshift ring in their backyard and copy the moves of their favorite WWE Superstars. It seems Hype just didn't have the budget to hold their matches in a proper venue. Perhaps they were hoping to be noticed by promoters who would book their wrestlers for their shows, but I don't know if anything like that actually happened. Anyway, back to Guvan. Of course, I know very little about him. He created an Instagram account around the same time he started wrestling, but posted only a couple dozen photos back then including the selfies (thirst traps?) included at the bottom of this post. Hype Wrestling has a YouTube Channel which is still up even though nothing seems to have been added to it since 2014. You can see a few of Guvan's matches there. If anyone has any information on Guvan (his real name may be Tyler Guvanovich, although I can't confirm that), please share it with us in the Comments section. Thanks again to Paul for introducing us to Guvan.

  1. He's a keeper!

I wonder if anyone (the pros, Thunder's Arena, etc.) ever checkout these backyard wrestling sites for outreach and possible recruitment. This guy certainly looks like he has potential.

About the same time there was another guy on the "circuit," I think his name was Matt Steele, though he just went by Steele who seemed like a possible.

  3. There's also this backyard wrestling match (well, it took place in a backyard, so it fits the description):

  4. I used to collect Guvan's videos, but first time I've seen his Instagram. FYI, Hype has its own eponymous Youtube channel: http://youtu.be/4nMVVzGbuIE
and it has a “Guvan Music Video” posted only six months ago. There are also a number of 30-60 min. Hype full episodes that date back about four years. Maybe something you haven’t seen. Anon.

As long as we're sharing, another hot backyarder I found once went by the name "Prodigy Snake," and the matches were not even a ring most of the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvqNTWCnOhw
Snake seems to have gotten more toned and made a successful transition into the regular Indies as Matt Harmon

His Youtube channel even has a match against former TNA star Chase Stevens:

  5. Anonymous, please put some space between text and Link addresses as Musclemanfan_NZ did. When you don't it makes it very difficult to Copy it for Pasting into the address box.

    2. Thank you!

I had to Copy your whole Comment, Paste it to Notes, disentangle the addresses then Copy and Paste into the box.

Not impossible to deal with, unnecessarily complicated.

  6. Prodigy Snake shows the kind of potential that Guvan could have had as a pro.
