Finn Who?

Prince Devitt made his debut on NXT yesterday and what name does WWE give him? Finn Balor. Yes, Finn Balor. Here are some images from Prince Devitt, I mean, Finn Balor's first NXT match (Finn's tag team partner is Japanese wrestler Kenta, now called Hideo Itami). There was a video of this match posted by a fan on YouTube, but WWE quickly shut it down. Read more about what transpired here. So anyway, more about the name Finn Balor. 411 Mania reports that "this isn't necessarily a point at random dictionary word situation. Balor is a figure in Celtic mythology, the king of the Fomorians and a god of blight. The name is likely an homage of sorts to Devitt's Irish nationality." What do you think of the name Finn Balor?

There's already a meme about the whole name change!

  1. It is a cut above most of the WWE's efforts, I suppose, e.g., Dash WIlder.
Would've liked Prince Balor better, but as long as they're doing fish parts, he can have brothers named Gill and Flip.

  2. Well in my opinion Prince Devitt has a name in wrestling not only Europe and Japan also in Mexico...So the name is not even good enough.Yet he is the man

  4. As I understand it, the WWE establishes legal rights to the names it gives its wrestlers, or maybe it is more precise to say: the wrestling characters it creates, hence the practice of renaming them, even the ones with established names/reputations. So yes, I agree with Anonymous 2, and as Anonymous 1, I also agree with myself..

  5. All things considered...nyah and meh.

If you have to have a WWE gimmick I suppose that it seems that they put some thought into it. But the result isn't euphonious.

Irish myth and legend is vast. They could have done better, I think.

  6. I assume that Devitt is continuing his heel turn, but even so I think that taking Balor as part of his gimmick is a bit overboard. I mean, the closest pop culture equivalent would probably be Sauron from Lord of the Rings. Beyond mean to evil.
